A Vintage Holiday

Around this time last year, I did one of my favorite shoots to date.  Another local fashion stylist, Ashley Meyers, and I had an idea to create a vintage shoot.  Everything you would imagine for a holiday party would be front and center … lights, a Christmas tree, fresh sprigs, a gorgeous table setting, Christmas music and, of course, vintage fashion.  We rounded up another local blogger, Lindsey Schuster of ‘The Mother Chic,’ and an amazing team of makeup artists and hair stylists to be part of the shoot and away we went!

Ashley set the stage in her beautiful home
Around the table in Ashley’s vintage dresses. Look at the feathers around the sleeves on the red dress I’m wearing … just fabulous!

Laughing so hard I scrunch my nose. Not the greatest photo of me but so worth the moment.
Decorating the tree

As I sit and look at these photos one year later, I realize there is a peacefulness and stillness about them.  As I imagine it, living back in ‘vintage times’ of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s would have a different feel than todays device-driven, internet crazed generations. Even though I appreciate very much all that technology offers us, I often wish we could go back to a more simple time.  A time when eating dinner together as a family was paramount to running around to sporting events, practice, or a PTO meeting.  Last year, I wanted to give the gift of time … more time with my husband, more time with our two boys, more time with family and friends.  I will admit I did NOT do a good job of providing more time for anyone … in fact, I have never felt more spread thin than I have this past year.  As we approach the new year, I challenge myself and I challenge all of you to give the gift of time and to slow down.  Slow down enough so that you may be present in every moment (ok, most moments … we’re human) and with every breath. Do more yoga, practice meditating, pray … do whatever fills your soul with more peace.  Be enlightened and more patient … with family, friends and, more importantly, with yourself. As we say goodbye to 2017, lets look upward and onward.  Lets conquer some of the goals we set for ourselves in 2018 and lets support each other along the way. Yes?

Anthropologie Hot List

Many of us rely on Anthropologie for their unique selection of clothing, mixed price points and amazing customer service.  Beyond that, the possibilities are endless when you walk through the door.

Recently, I spent an evening with fellow local bloggers and the personal shoppers at Anthropologie in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia. Our goal for the evening? To create unique holiday looks that spoke to our own personal style.

Above I’m wearing a dress by Tracy Reese, which I had purchased at the Anthropologie in King of Prussia. I immediately fell in love with the lace fabrication and versatility of the dress. It came with a black slip dress underneath but I decided to style it with a bodysuit, jeans and over the knee boots. If I had only one piece of advice for people it would be to tap into your creative side and think outside the box when styling your outfits. You don’t have to wear an outfit exactly the way they style it in the store or catalog. There are so many ways to wear this dress, which I will feature in my blog soon! To order this exact dress, click here.

Ok. Bomber jackets. When this trend first hit the streets I was not a fan and thought I wouldn’t wear a bomber jacket after their stint in the 90’s.  But then,  they started designing them with embroidery and appliqués —> hook, line and sinker. The one I’m wearing here is A-MAZING! Shop it HERE!!! !!!!! If you’re a hat person and want to change things up from the common floppy hat trend, try a beret! They are so Parisian and so chic. Shop a similar one here.

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite bomber jackets for you to shop:

My fave! A colorblock vegan leather bomber!

Another embroidered option – chic and trendy

Love the cutouts on this one

My fave layering bandeau!🙌🏻

Of the moment VELVET!

OTK Roundup

Over the knee boots are a must this season.  They have been in stores for years and they don’t show signs of disappearing any time soon.  In fact, the silhouettes keep evolving and the lengths keep moving further and further up the thigh.  I’ve had mine for years and I am so pleased that, once again, I can wear them all winter long. This is not my first post on over the knee boots and, truthfully, I hope I can post another one next year.  I just can’t get enough of them!

The grey suede stilettos I’m wearing in these photos are from the incredibly chic brand, M. Gemi.  I instantly became a fan of their brand when I discovered their 100% Italian leather, hand-made designs on Instagram. It’s hard to find impeccably designed, luxurious shoes at an attainable price point these days but M.Gemi is changing that for consumers.  They offer their shoes directly to customers, cutting the middle man out, which means you get an insanely gorgeous pair of leather shoes (including the soles) for an insanely reasonable price. Plus, when you use my code alison143, you get an additional 20% off 🙂

Shop M. Gemi here.

Over the years, I have invested in more than one pair. Pictured here are a stiletto and a 1/2 inch heel but most recently I purchased another pair in an of-the-moment block heel. There are an infinite number of ways to wear them from skinny jeans, shift dresses and rompers to long oversized sweaters or oversized blazers.  In the winter months, you can essentially wear them as tights if you buy a pair that are extra tall.  The pair you see pictured below are designed by L.K. Bennett and I’ve worn them more times than I can count.  At this point, my cost per wear has to be a negative number and since they are a flat boot, they have been eternally versatile –> meaning, they were worth every penny! If you’re ready to take the plunge, invest in a pair that fits your personal style so you can get as much wear out of them as possible.

Our little buddy, Fenske, paying us a visit during the shoot. So cute!

Layered with Troll Beads

Two of my good friends, a few months back, suggested I feature a photo on Instagram of my “go-to accessories”. The pieces I wear over and over again. The pieces that look infinitely different when styled with different outfits. The pieces that would make my “cost per wear” calculation nearly zero.   Which accessories made the cut? I can tell you indefinitely that my layered troll beads bracelets did.  With flying colors.

I have owned two leather wrap bracelets for years and barely take them off. I wear them to the gym, in the shower, and to bed at night. They are so versatile and can be layered beautifully and effortlessly with so many of my other go-to pieces that it has been a no brainer to wear them over and over and over again.

Many of you already know that I love to layer everything. Necklaces, rings, bracelets, tops and even my outerwear in the winter months. Layering for me is my comfort zone. I feel it lends a sort of laid back, relaxed vibe and is so incredibly easy to achieve.  With a few new pieces added to your accessories wardrobe, mixed with what you already own, you too can become a layering queen. Believe me,  you’ll become addicted to layering once you start.

Here are a few photos featuring how I styled my new Troll Beads twisted copper cuff with skull charm 💀 (how cool is this charm?). I layered one with my leather wrap bracelets, which I referenced above, and wore one on its own around my upper arm. Below you’ll see that I wore them all together on one arm, which I often do.

I am a huge proponent of thinking outside the box (see my previous post about that by clicking here). So, when Troll Beads asked me to partner with them for the second time and gave me the freedom to style their pieces as I see fit to my personal style, I was all in. As soon as I saw this skull charm, I knew exactly what I wanted to do … and I couldn’t wait to layer them. I ordered two of the exact same cuff, as I often do, and layered them with my leather wrap bracelets.

Teva – Old Brand, New Twist

Tevas. We all remember them.  We all wore them.  If you were a child of the 80’s and early 90’s there is no way you didn’t own at least one, if not two, pairs of the classic, strappy, sporty sandal.  Now they’re back with an updated, trendier version of their original selves…and I couldn’t be happier.

You all know how much I love a flatform and, in my opinion, it is THE shoe of the season.  High-end brands like Prada and Marc Jacobs have graced the runway with Teva look-alike versions and other high-end companies are asking to collaborate with the classic brand. Teva has always done Teva; they have stuck to the design which has always worked for them but they have now given it an unexpected twist. And consumers can’t get enough of them.

The best part is that  you don’t have to reserve them only for your casual, adventurous days like we are used to.  With the athleisure trend at an all time high, you can wear them with dresses, skirts, rompers, jumpsuits, and even socks (yes, socks). Stay tuned for all sorts of collaborations! This brand isn’t going anywhere any time soon and I say we embrace it and run free…

Cutout Bathing Suits

Many of you have private messaged me about this black bathing suit I wore on a recent trip to Mexico.  I bought it from South Moon Under and they still have it in stock. Yay! It fits true to size and has a major slimming effect — you will love it!  The cutouts are right on trend and the seam detailing along the sides help to whittle the waistline,  making you feel your best even on a bad day.  Believe me, after eating guacamole and chips every day in Cancun, this is exactly what I needed at the end of our vacation. This suit hit the mark where slimming details are concerned and I have worn it several times since Mexico … and that is a successful purchase in my book. Hope you love it too! xoxo

p.s. how cute are my friends bathing suits too?!? I love having fashionable (and fun) friends 🙂

This is my husband, Jim.  I haven’t introduced him to my blogging community yet because he doesn’t really like to be on social media that much.  I wasn’t planning on posting pics until I got requests from you and these are the only photos I have so … hello Jim!

These girls are a bundle of fun, I tell you. Fun, fun and more fun!

We had the best time together with just our husbands and us. No kids.  Have you taken time out for yourself lately? Taken a trip with your husband and your friends? If not, I highly recommend it.  It was fab.

Oh heyyyy! Getting goofy with my girl.

Box of Style

By now, many of you have heard of Rachel Zoe’s ‘Box of Style’. For those of you who haven’t heard, strap on your seat belts. This seasonal box ships four times a year and contains items which are specifically curated by stylist Rachel Zoe. Think caftans, leather goods, beauty and hair products, jewelry, sunglasses and more. You never know what you’re going to get until the “Hero Item” is revealed but I can guarantee you this — you will not be disappointed. This box of style, in my opinion, is the best on the market in terms of ‘subscription’ boxes and is, by far, the greatest bang for your buck. The items Rachel chooses are, simply put, fabulous and flawless.  The best news? You will receive $10 off your first box when you use this link 👉🏻Box of Style/ChicbyAlisonRose.

Here are a few photos of me wearing the entire summer box of style captured by my amazing friend and photographer, Lindsey Clark (@takeitoutside). I used the Ouai (pronounced ‘way’) Wave spray to create texture in my side braid.  Since then I have used it every day for the most effortless beachy waves under the sun.  The smell is A-MAZING and it works like a lightweight mousse, leaving your hair with soft waves that are fluid and sticky free.  This will definitely be a staple in my beauty bag from now on!

Glasses (by YHF Los Angeles), Necklace/Ring set (by LuvAJ), Caftan by (Michael Stars). All pieces are part of the summer Box of Style.

Hat: Madewell (my own). The best part about this hat is that you can roll it up, tie a hair band around it and throw it in your suitcase. Get it here (it’s on sale!)

Look at the lariat necklace and ring (middle finger) from Luv AJ!  I’ve already worn mine several times layered with my other gold jewelry and yep, you’ve guessed it, this is also part of the summer Box of Style 🙂

When Spring Plays Hide and Seek

Any of you who live in the Northeast know that this spring season has been playing a very long and very taunting game of hide and go seek.  One week it’s 80 degrees and the next week it’s 50 degrees, which makes getting dressed complicated.  Especially when we are yearning for the warmth from the sun and the ability to dress in off-the-shoulder tops and toe-baring sandals.  Well, there is a solution to the madness and there are, in fact, ways of dressing appropriately for this insanely transitional weather we have going on.

Take a look at this outfit I have styled here, for example.  I pulled one of my favorite asymmetrical, off the shoulder shoulder shift dresses out of my closet and paired it with my over the knee suede boots.  Who cares that I had to get them out of storage because I was overzealous in putting away all my “winter” gear.  I’ll grab these bad boys any day of the year if the weather permits.  And if that means that I have to wear them in May, when it’s suppose to be at least 70 degrees, than fine.  I’ll do it.

Side note: My friend and photographer is a photojournalist by profession and is as creative as they come.  Since we had her house and her gorgeous daughter on hand for this shoot, we got creative and had so much fun pretending like we dress like this even as we feed our magazine worthy children honey bunches of oats 🙂 Not true obvi.  But I have worn this dress and boots several times — out to dinner, to a new years eve party, and to a Christmas party.  Just not when I’m serving my family food and arranging flowers.

I love how my skin plays peek-a-boo in this photo.  That’s precisely why I love OTK boots so much.  They look wildly chic over skinny jeans and tastefully sexy with a dress.

This last photo is all about the ear cuff and cocktail ring.  Ear cuffs are MAJOR this season and are so different from what we’ve seen in the past few years.  I love changing things up and wearing trends so I jumped on this one early.  I’ve attached links to some ear cuffs here and here as well as transitional spring dresses here and here  over the knee boots here and here.  Happy Shopping 🙂

Fringe Benefits

If you have followed my social media accounts for more than one day, you know how much I love fringe.  Similarly, if you have shopped in any store this spring, you know that fringe is on EVERYTHING this season; bags, shoes, clothing and accessories.  Fringe is the one adornment that, in my opinion, does not get old.  And I can’t get enough.  Check out the movement on this fringe skirt.  Believe me, I know you will not be twirling and dancing on a daily basis like you see me doing in these photos but fringe has such a playful vibe even through basic movements like walking.

Here I am wearing a fabulous fringe skirt I found on the website Forward by Elyse Walker.  It was on MAJOR sale (two of my very favorite words) so I scooped it up and wore it with another one of my favorite pieces; a body suit by Twenty, which I found on sale at Revolve Clothing.  Whether I’m shopping online or in a store, I always take my time searching in the sale section first; I often find amazing, quality pieces in the sale section at a fraction of the retail cost.  If you’re like me and enjoy shopping on a regular basis, this is the most logical, economical way to shop.  I have linked a similar Tamara Mellon skirt (also on sale! Yay!) here. I’ve also linked an awesome bodysuit suitable for spring/summer here.

I’ve posted a few more photos below since I want to bring attention to the 90’s trend, which is having a major moment right now; chokers.  OMG.  I can’t believe this trend is back but I love it!  I’ve worn this gold choker several times and I do not plan on storing it away any time soon. I’ve worn it alone or layered with other necklaces and, in my opinion, it elevates my outfit every time.  It was more versatile than I thought it would be through the winter and into spring…and I’m excited to continue wearing it through the summer.

Below are links to a bunch of fringe options to shop for spring/summer.  I’ve linked many different items here, from shoes, bags and necklaces to skirts, bathing suits and hair accessories — so please bare with me! I couldn’t stop linking since I’m a bit obsessed with this trend! Happy Shopping 🙂
